HERO-MOVIE: The main character (protagonist) drives the story. James Bond, Indiana Jones, Ripley (Aliens) are just a few examples. Viewers root for the hero. It is the core values of the character that people love such as integrity, caring, strength, intelligence, courage and more.
HERO-BUSINESS: Who or what is the hero of your story? It could be the owner of the business, your product, or the customer. It could even be an animated character such as the Greko in the Geico commercials. The hero gives your business (or product) a desirable and relatable identity. Your hero needs core values such as integrity, caring, strength, intelligence, courage and more. Apple Computers’ core values are unsurpassed quality, service, and innovation. These values attract people and give your business a distinctive voice.
THEME-MOVIE: The theme is the central message of a story. In the movie, Titanic, love is the topic of the film, but loving someone of a different social class is the theme. The theme runs through every scene and unites each into a concise whole. Author, Robert McGee says that theme is “the purest form of a story’s meaning, the vision of life the audience members carry away into their lives.”
THEME-BUSINESS: The theme is the central message of your business or product. With Starbucks, coffee is the product category, but having a friendly atmosphere where people can sit and chill is the theme. The inviting atmosphere is the central message. It runs through every part of your business, making it a concise whole. Your business theme should be the purest form of your business meaning that customers carry away into their lives. Everything from your logo and slogan to your packaging and advertising should represent the theme of your business.

VILLAIN-MOVIE: The villain is the person who is trying to stop your hero from reaching his or her goal. He’s the guy you hate. Some movies are driven by the villain as much as the protagonist (hero). The villain is the person people love to hate. Think of Roses’ fiancé in Titanic.
VILLAIN-BUSINESS: Every business should have a villain to rally against—a person or concept that represents, according to the story world of the business, “evil.” What is stopping your customer from reaching the goal you have for them? If you sell organic food the “villain” is non-organic foods rife with chemicals that can make the customer unhealthy. Having a villain to “fight” gives your business or product greater identity and power. Said differently, for a business it can be just as important to fight against something as it is to fight for something.
GOAL-MOVIE: The hero in every movie has a goal. This goal becomes the goal of the audience members. Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz had the goal to return home. The journey to achieve that goal is the story. The adventure along the way is what makes audiences cheer and squirm in their seats. The goal can also be called the Dream Realized.
GOAL-BUSINESS: The goal for a business is the goal you have for the customer using your products. It’s the Dream Realized that your products make come true for the customer. Making money for the owner is not a goal. To help save children’s lives with safe tires, like Michelin tires, is a goal people can get behind. Your customer must love and adopt the goal the business creates for them. The goal needs to be clearly stated and made well known.

BEATS-MOVIE: A “beat” is an important point in a movie that pushes the story forward. It involves action or dialogue and is designed to cause an emotional response in the characters and, or the audience. Example: In the Shawshank Redemption, Andy (Tim Robbins) is found guilty for having murdered his wife and is therefore sentenced to life in jail. This is an emotional beat which leads to the next emotional beat which shows Andy arriving at Shawshank prison. Beats lead to other beats. Cause, effect, cause, effect, etc.
BEATS-BUSINESS: If you think of your business as an ongoing story you will set up emotional beats that will move your story forward in the eyes of the consumer. These would be actions or communications that create an emotional response and leads the consumer to act. A person receives a product from you. MOOD-MOVIE: Mood is very important in constructing the story world of a movie. It refers to the “colors” that evoke certain emotions and vibe. Also called tone or atmosphere. Every scene paints a mood using lighting, music, weather, and other devices. A sad drama will create moods different than an exciting action film. Little things can depict a mood, a crucifix on a wall in the background might foreshadow the death of a character, for example.
MOOD-BUSINESS: The story world of your business includes every visual, audio and sensual aspect of your business. Whole Foods uses green as their main color because it represents health. The colors of your website, the words, videos and graphics used in your ads and social media all need to express the right mood for your business or product. Moods can express joy, happiness, anger, security, on and on. The mood of your overall business should align with your theme and core values.
MOTIF-MOVIE: Motifs are those elements that reinforce the central idea of the theme. In Jaws the theme is something dangerous lurking below the water. This theme is reinforced repeatedly throughout the movie with not only sharks lurking in the water, but sharks lurking on land in the form of the politicians and angry town’s people. Motifs are smaller representations of theme.

Each year, millions of dollars of investment money go toward making movies. The one’s that get made are the ones with the most compelling loglines. The logline sells the movie script to the producer, and once the movie is made, sells the movie to the audience.
